An overview of MassMutual SpecialCare
SM seminars

More often than not, families don’t understand the unique life care planning issues that can come with raising a child with a disability or other special need. MassMutual’s SpecialCare program helps these families find the answers they need. As part of the program, we’ve developed a curriculum of seven seminars that take an in-depth look at some of the key issues — including life care planning, special needs trusts and the use of government programs.

Life Care Plan
For families looking for guidance understanding the many dimensions of life care planning, this seminar focuses on breaking down the process into specific steps to be able to address the additional complexities involved.

Special Needs Trust
The Special Needs Trust is a cornerstone of life care planning. This seminar dissects the process — from understanding the need for a trust, to working with an attorney and through to the specific elements of setting it up.

Government Programs
This seminar focuses on cracking the code of the available government programs for families of adults and children with special needs — from Medicaid and SSDI, to state waivers and children’s health insurance programs.

Establishing guardianship is of particular importance when it comes to people with disabilities. In this seminar, families will start to understand the many intricacies that must be considered from specific terminology, state law variations and the process of appointing or terminating a guardian.

Letter of Intent
Whether families are just beginning the life care planning process or have already begun to put a plan into place, it’s important to have a Letter of Intent. This seminar provides information and structure for doing so.

Who We Are and What We Do
As an introduction to life care planning and the MassMutual SpecialCare program, in this seminar a Special Care Planner will provide an overview of the key components of a solid life care plan, a list of questions to help guide families as well as more information on the unique role of a MassMutual Special Care Planner.

Living with Autism
As a part of our collaboration with Easter Seals, MassMutual conducted a groundbreaking study entitled Living with Autism that focuses on the challenges of families living with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This seminar presents the background, specifics and results of the study and identifies resources available to address the concerns.
